What do you get from a barrel of oil?
A standard barrel contains 42 US gallons of crude oil. It breaks down like this;
Gasoline 19.65 gallons
Distillate fuel oil 10.03 gallons
Jet fuel 4.07 gallons
Residual fuel oil 1.72 gallons

During the refining process there is actually a 2.2 gallon net gain, so 1 barrel of oil produces 44.2 gallons of product. Some of the other products that are created during the refining process are liquefied refinery gas, asphalt and road oil, various oils for foodstocks, lubricants, special napthas, kerosene, waxes and misc. other products.

Gasoline Taxes!
  The nationwide average tax on gasoline is 45.9 cents per gallon. A summary of federal and state excise taxes and other taxes collected on gasoline is shown below. The federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon. The average state gasoline excise tax is 18.7 cents per gallon. Other taxes add 8.8 cents per gallon to the average tax on gasoline. These other taxes include applicable sales taxes, gross receipts taxes, oil inspection fees, underground storage tank fees and other miscellaneous environmental fees. Adding these taxes and fees to the state excise taxes results in a volume-weighted average state tax of 27.5 cents per gallon.
